Caribbean Discounts

August 23, 1987|JACK ADLER

Until mid-December you're likely to find off-season rates at most Caribbean properties, with various special discount programs offered at some properties and on some islands.

On Puerto Rico you can get a set of complimentary tickets for different events in the year-round LeLoLai festival, a series of performances that celebrate the island's traditional music and dance, if you stay a minimum of four nights (seven nights during high season) at participating hotels at regular room rates.

The festival packet also includes a coupon booklet with discounts for sightseeing tours, car rentals, stores, theme parks, museums and ferryboat rides.

You can get a free round of golf and complimentary souvenirs of local products such as Bacardi rum bottles at the Bacardi Rum plant. Free admission to the El Nuevo Comandante race track clubhouse and a San Juan bay cruise are other perks.

If you're staying longer than four nights you can also get a 10% discount at the island's paradores or country inns on weekdays.

The complete set of tickets in the LeLoLai kit is worth $120, with folkloric and musical shows costing $5 to $7 if you buy them at general admission. Many of these shows are held at hotels. Food and drinks are extra.

The festival packet can be bought separately in Puerto Rico; it's $8 for adults and $6 for children.

Contact travel agents or the Puerto Rico Tourism Co. at (800) 223-6530.

On Paradise Island in the Bahamas a "Summer Free-For-All" offers a batch of free extras until Dec. 15, if you stay at any of nine member resorts of the Paradise Island Tourism Development Assn.

Complimentary features include use of snorkeling equipment and bicycles, scuba lesson, tennis and golf clinics, a dolphin show, beach party, nightly cocktail parties at various resorts, a continental breakfast at the Paradise Island Casino with a gaming lesson and chips worth $10 and shopping discounts (you get a coupon booklet at check-in).

The nine properties are the Bay View Village, Club Land'Or, Sheraton Grand Hotel, Holiday Inn, Loews Harbour Cove, Ocean Club, Paradise Paradise Beach Resort, Paradise Island Resort & Casino, and Villas in Paradise.
