'Panic in Gulf, Money in Bank'

August 27, 1987

Is it possible that we are going to endanger more American lives protecting oil belonging to another country, and even if it is oil we are buying, why do we continue to do so?

We should get out of the mode of operation where we have to depend on the Middle East for oil. Suggested ways to do this:

1. Make methanol out of garbage or some sort of alternative fuel from garbage (this gets rid of the garbage).

2. Build a mass-transit system similar to the ones in other countries (try to get one-third to one-half the automobiles off the streets). This would cut down on pollution problems too.
