Argentine Asylum OKd for Haitian Dissident

September 01, 1987|Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES — The government on Monday granted asylum to Bernard Sansaricq, leader of failed attempts to oust Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier in 1982 and 1983.

Sansaricq, who took refuge Friday in the Argentine Embassy in Port-au-Prince, will be guaranteed safe passage from Haiti, the government said.

Sansaricq, who has been in hiding since Aug. 3, opposes the ruling military council that succeeded Duvalier when he fled the country on Feb. 7, 1986.
