Pakistan Seizes Ethnic Flags to Avert Riots

September 03, 1987

KARACHI, Pakistan — About 750 people have been arrested in house raids and dozens of weapons and flags of ethnic groups have been seized in southern Pakistan since Friday in an operation to quell ethnic riots, police said Wednesday.

Thirty-five people were killed and 200 were injured in the recent violence in Karachi and Hyderabad between rival Pushtun and Mohajirs that began when the flag of a Pushtun organization was raised in the predominantly Mohajir Faisal colony near Karachi's international airport.
