5 Firms to Pay Patlex for Using Gould Patents

September 08, 1987

Patlex Corp. in Chatsworth has signed agreements under which five companies will pay Patlex licensing royalties, expected to total more than $500,000, for using certain forms of laser technology. The companies are Eastman Kodak, Union Carbide, Chrysler, Amdahl and EverReady Battery.

The lasers involved were developed by inventor Gordon Gould, who soon is expected to receive his second patent on the technology. Patlex's principal business has been to help Gould secure the patents in court and to negotiate licensing agreements with companies that want to use the technology.

In return for litigating Gould's case, Patlex receives 64% of any royalty income derived from the patents. Gould himself gets 20% of the royalties and Refac Technology, Patlex's biggest stockholder, gets the other 16%.
