Trout and other game fish will be removed this week from lakes and streams in Tulare County, the first step in a drive to exterminate white bass in the region. Once these species are saved, the Department of Fish and Game will put rotenone, a fish poison, in the water to kill off the bass before they can escape from the lower San Joaquin Valley into the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. There the bass would pose a deadly threat to the declining numbers of striped bass and salmon, officials say. The poison does not affect humans, birds or animals, officials say. The poisoning is scheduled to begin Sept. 28 or 29.
