Chicago Teachers on Strike

September 08, 1987|United Press International

CHICAGO — The city's 29,000-member teachers' union went on strike today, saying there was little chance of starting classes as scheduled Wednesday for 430,000 students. The walkout nearly doubled the number of educators on picket lines across the nation.

Contract talks between the Chicago Teachers Union and school district negotiators were suspended, and the picket lines went up as the district said it could not provide raises. Teachers' strikes affecting a total of 266,000 students continued in Detroit and nine other Michigan districts, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Washington state.
