The World : 13 Die in Philippine Clash

September 13, 1987

Communist rebels battled Philippine troops in fierce fighting near Manila that raged for 15 hours, military sources said. At least 13 combatants were killed when a patrol encountered about 60 members of the New People's Army about 30 miles from the capital. Meanwhile, a top guerrilla leader, Satur Ocampo of the National Democratic Front, appealed for support against the "bankrupt and worn-out" government of President Corazon Aquino, shaken by a failed coup and Cabinet crisis. Also over the weekend, several hundred Aquino backers participated in a "march for peace" to show support for the loyal troops who crushed the Aug. 28 coup attempt.
