Kissinger on Nicaragua

September 14, 1987

Henry Kissinger seems to have forgotten his Nixon Administration years. Wasn't he instrumental in normalizing our relations with China? Are they not moving in the direction he seems to want for Nicaragua? In his "When Compromise Serves No Purpose" (Opinion, Sept. 6), he implies that the Sandinista Communists will never change. How does he rationalize that belief with what he and President Nixon accomplished in China.

China has changed. It is more like one Kissinger would approve of. We should quit acting towards Managua with paranoia. We should start supporting the peace process and then get on with encouraging them to adopt open democratic reforms.

Please, Mr. Kissinger, look to your record with China and then decide how to relate to Nicaragua.
