A man who identified himself as a Roman Catholic priest and counseled relatives of victims of the Aug. 16 Northwest Airlines crash in Detroit may have been an imposter soliciting cases for a lawyer, authorities said. They said they were looking for a man calling himself Father John Irish who apparently mingled with other clergy and spoke with relatives, referring at least one to a Florida attorney. However, a man identifying himself as the priest called Cable News Network and said he was a member of the Ministry of Salvation Church of Chula Vista, Calif. He said he was at the crash site to offer help and did not refer anyone to a lawyer.
