The Nation

September 15, 1987

Some Chicago city leaders urged a boycott of the Illinois state lottery in an effort to force legislators to give schools a bigger percentage of the take, thus providing funds to raise teacher salaries. The 28,000 members of the Chicago Teachers Union are among striking teachers in seven states, the walkouts affecting about 710,000 students. Meanwhile, in Indianapolis, a strike vote by that city's teachers was expected to swell the walkout, but in Revere, Mass., a tentative settlement was expected to end a strike affecting 43,000 students.
