WASHINGTON — A federal judge today sentenced the former chief of staff at the Department of Health and Human Services to one year in prison for improperly receiving $55,300 from the government and a private foundation.
C. McClain Haddow, 37, who was chief of staff for former HHS Secretary Margaret Heckler, admitted receiving $33,540 for fund-raising activity from the T. Bear Foundation, which was set up under government auspices to promote hand washing among doctors and nurses. He also admitted arranging speech-writing contracts for two friends, who paid his wife $21,790 to do the work.
