'Social Assets vs. Energy Future'

September 17, 1987

I believe that environmentalists have more in mind than "the environment of the imagination," as Krauthammer puts it. Mankind has a responsibility to preserve itself by protecting ecosystems and the ozone layer, the air and the water. Man is building too fast for nature to adapt by evolution. The natural world is not only a pristine place, but also a place we live in. Decisions about the environment, especially the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, must be carefully and selflessly made.

If I were as unfair as Krauthammer, I would say that oil interests were ultimately in the business for the money, not for patriotism. The environmental situation is the most crucial one facing all life and must not be sacrificed for imperialism and pocket change!
