San Diego Roundup : Hendricks Is League's MVP

September 18, 1987

Steve Hendricks, a former Coronado High School and United States International University baseball player, has been voted the most valuable player of the Class-A Northwest League.

Hendricks, who was drafted by the Padres, led the league in at-bats (303), hits (108), doubles (25) and RBIs (75). He was second in average (.358). Hendricks also hit nine home runs and five triples and had a 15-game hitting streak for the Spokane Indians, who won the Northwest League championship with a 54-22 record.

It was Hendricks' first season with the Indians after playing three years at USIU. Hendricks, who plays first base, was selected unanimously by the league's eight managers.
