Michael Hammer, 32, the only grandson of Armand Hammer, chairman and chief executive of Occidental Petroleum, was elected a vice president and assistant secretary of the energy conglomerate Friday.
Young Hammer joined Occidental in 1982 after getting his MBA at Columbia University. He has held various jobs in the firm's domestic and overseas oil and gas subsidiaries in Tulsa, Okla., Houston, London, Oman and Los Angeles.
He will be one of 19 vice presidents at Occidental, the third tier of management below a dozen executive vice presidents. A spokesman said he didn't know if anyone will report to Michael Hammer.
The post of assistant corporate secretary is a new one created for Hammer after he sat in for vacationing Paul Hebner, Occidental's executive vice president and secretary. The spokesman said: "He did so well they gave him a promotion."
Michael Hammer is the only son of Hammer's only child, Julian, who was born in Moscow in 1929 to Hammer's Russian-born first wife, Olga, a cabaret singer.
Michael Hammer and his wife, Dru, live in West Los Angeles with their son, Armand.
