Pope John Paul's Visit to L.A.

September 21, 1987

Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates should be proud of his "boys in blue" for their appearance, helpfulness and conduct during the papal parade. I saw several police officers courteously giving directions and answering questions to people unfamiliar with the downtown area. I also know their day began early and continued late into that evening. It was comforting to know that the caravans of police in the procession were there as a safety measure for both the Pope and the public. It was a most professional and organized effort put forth by the Los Angeles Police Department.
