Hirohito Will Have Surgery

September 21, 1987|From Reuters

TOKYO — Emperor Hirohito, the world's longest-reigning monarch, will enter a hospital on Tuesday for intestinal surgery, the head of the Imperial Household Agency announced today.

But the 86-year-old emperor's senior doctor, Akira Takagi, told reporters he did not consider the problem to be serious and said the emperor should be able to return home within a week. "Considering the location of the problem, the chance of there being a malignant tumor is statistically very small," Takagi said.
