September 22, 1987

RJR Nabisco and Biotechnica International, a genetic engineering company, announced a partnership to develop improved food products through biotechnology. The venture is designed to produce new varieties of fruits and vegetables that could be more nutritious, more disease-resistant, better flavored or have a longer shelf life. The two companies did not disclose their investment in the partnership, but a spokesman said RJR Nabisco would provide the bulk of the funding while Biotechnica would contribute mostly its research capabilities.
