HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Cleveland Adds Insult to Injury in 13-6 Victory

September 27, 1987|STEVEN FLEISCHMAN

Cleveland running back Mark Mooney scored on a three-yard touchdown run as time ran out Saturday night in a 13-6 nonleague win over visiting Chatsworth, adding controversy to an otherwise uneventful game.

Cleveland was leading, 7-6, with :03 left when the Cavaliers called a timeout with the ball on the Chatsworth three-yard line, giving Mooney his chance.

After the game, Chatsworth Coach Myron Gibford was heard questioning Cleveland Coach Steve Landress' timeout call. Landress defended the timeout by claiming that one of his linemen was hurt.

Two officials, however, claimed they saw no Cleveland player injured.

Mooney rushed for 142 yards on 20 carries. Cleveland quarterback Jamie Grossman completed 13 of 17 passes for 159 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Turhon O'Bannon in the first quarter to complete a 53-yard, five-play drive.
