John Charles Ries, a UCLA political science professor considered an expert on U.S. military organization and defense policy, is dead of cancer at age 57.
The university announced this week that he died at his Los Angeles home Sept. 17.
Ries, who came to UCLA from the faculty at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1965, wrote several books evaluating cost analysis as a decision-making tool in the Department of Defense and examining the structure of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
