San Clemente : City Nuclear Emergency Response Effort Praised

October 03, 1987

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the city an "exemplary performance" rating for its nuclear emergency preparedness program.

The agency had monitored a daylong nuclear emergency simulation within a 10-mile radius of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, located about five miles south of San Clemente.

Under federal requirements, nuclear power stations must simulate a nuclear emergency that would require a 10-square-mile evacuation.

Agency officials commended San Clemente for its ability to coordinate evacuations with local schools and other city and county agencies.
