NEW YORK — Wall Street suffered its worst one-day point decline in history as the Dow Jones industrial average tumbled 91.22 points today to 2,548.96.
After weakening throughout the session, the market went into a free fall in the last half-hour, topping the 86.61 loss suffered on Sept. 11, 1986. Today's decline was caused by worried investors unsettled first by a drop in the bond market and then by analysts' assessments that the market had reached a short-term high.
New York Stock Exchange volume was about 175.60 million shares compared with 159.65 million shares Monday.
