Backup Picture Unit Fails on Satellite

October 07, 1987|United Press International

WASHINGTON — The third of four imaging lamps aboard the GOES 6 weather satellite has failed, leaving the key Western weather watcher without a backup in its picture-taking system, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Tuesday.

Larry Heacock, director of satellite operations, said the last lamp that failed aboard GOES 6 lasted a year "and we can hope to get from a year to a year and a half out of this last of four lamps."

The GOES 6 weather satellite monitors weather patterns over the Pacific Ocean and Western United States. The GOES 7 satellite keeps tabs on the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern United States.
