Once again, right before Coach Bill Redell's disbelieving eyes, a team had marched downfield to score against Crespi. This time, Palmdale had taken the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead.
The week before, Redlands had tied Crespi, 17-17. Now Redell wonders how it happened at all.
Since Palmdale's first-quarter touchdown, Crespi has not allowed a point in 11 quarters. Crespi has yielded only 24 points in four games.
Crespi (3-0-1) has allowed an average of 196 yards a game. Since the 28-7 win over Palmdale, Crespi has defeated Santa Barbara, 55-0, and Taft, 44-0.
Passing: Hart's Darren Renfro continues to lead Valley-area quarterbacks in passing with 884 yards. Renfro, who succeeded All-Southern Section quarterback Jim Bonds, is ahead of Bonds' pace of last year. Bonds, a freshman at UCLA, had 870 yards passing after four games. . . . After throwing for only 519 yards with 1 touchdown and 9 interceptions last year, San Fernando's Joe Mauldin has passed for 335 yards and four touchdowns and has no interceptions in two games. The 6-2 senior is also the team's leading rusher with 146 yards.
Rushing: St. Genevieve's Ruben Aguirre was the Valley area's leading rusher for about five hours after a 223-yard performance against Pater Noster on Saturday afternoon. Aguirre, who has 575 yards, was overtaken by Crespi's Russell White, who rushed for 142 yards Saturday night against Taft to raise his total to 649. . . . Cliff Robinson of L. A. Baptist has rushed for 633 yards on 65 carries (9.7 average). Last season, the 5-7, 155-pounder had 602 yards on 140 carries (4.3).
Defense: Hart (3-1), which has allowed 315.8 yards a game, Hart (3-1) is last among Valley-area Southern Section teams in defense. In last week's 21-15 win over Saugus, the Indians held the opposition to fewer than 300 yards for the first time this season.
Offense: Three Valley 4-A teams were shut out last week. El Camino Real had just 39 yards in total offense in a 34-0 loss to Loyola. Kennedy had 91 total yards in a 28-0 loss to Alemany. Cleveland was blanked by Canoga Park, 33-0. . . . Hart snapped its second-half scoring drought against Saugus. After halftime in two preceding games, Hart had been blanked.
Scoring: Burroughs tailback Doug Dragomer, who scored four touchdowns in last week's 44-2 win over Glendale, has scored 54 points. . . . Burroughs placekicker Tommy Phillips kicked 5 extra points, 1 field goal and scored 1 touchdown to account for 14 points. . . . Chaminade's Chris Noonan has converted 11 of 11 PAT attempts, 3 of 4 field goal attempts and has scored 2 touchdowns for 32 points.
Oak Park tailback Jason Stein is running out of ways to score. In three games, Stein has scored on runs of 11 and 42 yards, on an 81-yard kickoff return, a 50-yard punt return, a 93-yard interception return and a 53-yard pass reception. . . . Sylmar's Jerome Casey, a 6-0, 170-pound sophomore, returned a punt for 26 yards and a kickoff for 83 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 14-14 tie with Van Nuys. Casey also has rushed for 195 yards on 27 carries in two games.
