Student Seeks Law Allowing Prisoners to Choose Execution

October 08, 1987|Associated Press

BOSTON — A high school student has submitted a bill to the state Legislature that would allow prisoners serving life sentences to choose execution instead.

Eric Lebson, 17, of Framingham, said Tuesday he proposed the plan for both "humanitarian and financial considerations" after serving as a Statehouse intern. His bill was sponsored by state Rep. William Vernon.

Under the bill, two state psychiatrists would have to attest that the inmate choosing death was mentally fit when making the request.
