The World : 15 Hurt in Nuclear Protest

October 11, 1987

As many as 15 people, including a member of West Germany's Parliament, were reported injured in a clash with police during a demonstration against the construction of a nuclear waste processing plant. Police said the clash occurred after about 25,000 demonstrators defied a police order and attempted to march from the Bavarian village of Wackersdorf to the nearby site of the proposed plant. A police spokesman said officers charged the crowd after several protesters began hurling stones at police. The injured included Michael Weiss, a member of Parliament from the environmentalist Greens party. Police said 27 protesters were detained.
