CANBERRA, Australia — A freak snowstorm hit Australia's capital city Monday only two weeks after one of the hottest Septembers on record.

The unseasonal flurry covered Canberra's streets with a half-inch of snow, and temperatures dropped to 32 degrees, the city's weather bureau said. The snow fell over much of southeastern Australia and was the region's first October snowfall in 13 years, the bureau added.
