Tennis Roundup : There's No Rest for Lendl, Yet

October 15, 1987|From Times Wire Services

Ivan Lendl defeated Australia's Peter Doohan, 6-2, 6-4, Wednesday in the first round of the $345,000 Australian Indoor Championships at Sydney, and then said he needed a break from tennis.

"Everybody needs a break from his job," Lendl said. "Tennis players should be no exception. We should play the Masters in October, then have two and a half months off and come to the Australian Open."

Lendl advanced immediately to Friday's quarterfinals because his second-round opponent, West Germany's Eric Jelen, was forced to withdraw because of an ankle injury.

Wimbledon champion Pat Cash and Scott Davis won second-round matches. Cash beat Australia's John Frawley, 6-2, 7-6, and Davis defeated Australia's Darren Cahill, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

At Stuttgart, West Germany, Chris Evert beat Czechoslovakia's Regina Marsikova, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the second round of a $175,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Argentina's Gabriela Sabatini also gained the second round, while Pam Shriver and Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia advanced to the third round. Sabatini routed West Germany's Sylvia Hanika, 6-2, 6-1; Shriver ousted Czechoslovakia's Jana Novotna, 6-2, 7-5, and Sukova overwhelmed France's Nathalie Tauziat, 6-2, 6-4.
