Mission Viejo : No Cougar Paw Prints Are Found in Backyard

October 16, 1987

Animal Control officers said Thursday they could find no paw prints to confirm a Mission Viejo woman's report that she chased a mountain lion from her backyard.

But Debbie Montgomery said, "I saw it and saw it jump our six-foot fence when I slapped my hand against the side of the house."

The cat, apparently a young one, had crouched under the rabbit hutch Wednesday night, she said.

"All my family are hunters, and believe me, I know a mountain lion from a bobcat," Montgomery said.

However, Animal Control Lt. Bill Donald, who sent investigators again Thursday to the home on Falencia near Wilderness Glen Park, said they found no prints.

Montgomery said that something killed two pet ducks in her yard about two months ago but that the rabbits are in a "very strong, locked hutch." Hereafter, she said, her children, ages 4 and 6, will not be allowed in the yard without an adult.
