COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Indian soldiers ringing Jaffna town in northern Sri Lanka killed at least 126 Tamil separatists who tried to break out of the last rebel stronghold, officials reported today.

Leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the main rebel militia, requested a cease-fire to end the weeklong offensive in which more than 500 Tamils have been reported killed. India said its soldiers would not let up until the rebels surrendered all their weapons.

Violence continued in eastern Sri Lanka, where reports said Tamil militants shot and killed 11 members of the island's Sinhalese majority on a bus in Pulmaddai, 28 miles north of Trincomalee port.
