SAN DIEGO COUNTY DIGEST

San Diego

Tourmaline Surfing Park was closed for at least 24 hours Monday night by the county Health Services Department because of a sewage spill.

Grease blocking a sewer main at the foot of Tourmaline Street was blamed for the 9 p.m. spill, which sent raw sewage out a manhole and into the ocean at 15 to 20 gallons a minute, county spokesman Jim Frank said.

He said City of San Diego crews expected to have repairs done by midnight.

The beach was posted as closed because of the contamination for 200 feet north and south of the park. Frank said the beach should be able to reopen by midnight tonight, or 24 hours after the flow is stopped.
