October 20, 1987

The U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance reported Monday that more than $3.9 million in money to fight drugs was distributed to cities including Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The money is designed to help police officers combat street-level drug sales and trafficking in "crack," a potent form of cocaine.

Police departments in Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles and Minneapolis have received about $300,000 each to set up crack task forces, while Long Beach will get $399,590, the agency announced.
