Guy Carbonneau recorded a goal and two assists Monday night to help the Montreal Canadiens to a 5-1 victory over the Minnesota North Stars in a game with 119 minutes in penalties.
Carbonneau scored his second goal of the season to give Montreal a 3-1 lead in the second period. Stephane Richer brought the puck around goalie Kari Takko, who lost sight of the puck as Carbonneau shoveled it into the empty net.
Kjell Dahlin scored on a break-away from center ice to put Montreal in front, 4-1, at the 4-minute mark of the final period. Carbonneau set up Chris Nilan to improve the margin to 5-1.
Montreal took a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal by Chris Chelios in first period. Bobby Smith scored with a backhander on a power play with just 26 seconds remaining in the period to make it 2-0.
Brian Bellows beat Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy to slice the margin to 2-1 in the second period.
Washington 4, New York 2--Dave Christian scored the tie-breaking goal with 6:28 left in the game to lead the Capitals to victory over the Rangers at New York.
