The State

October 21, 1987

Lawmakers in Washington said congressional negotiators are ready to quash the Navy's plan to base the battleship Missouri in San Francisco Bay. Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.), a leader of the plan, said Senate negotiators on a congressional joint conference committee had favored the $22-million proposal to base the refurbished World War II ship at San Francisco, but are now leaning toward agreement with the House--which is against spending the money. "Now that the Democrats control both houses of Congress," Wilson said, "it's highly possible they will prevail and succeed in eliminating the home-porting funds for San Francisco."
