EARNINGS

October 22, 1987

American Express Co. reported a decline in third-quarter net to $265 million from $293 million a year ago. The company cited a $33-million share of Fireman's Fund Corp.'s second-quarter loss as the significant reason for the decline. The third-quarter earnings also reflected a $5-million gain realized from the sale of property that had housed Shearson Lehman Bros.' London operations.
