Marine Guards Posted at Naval Academy Gates

October 27, 1987|Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Marines replaced civilian guards at the three gates to the Naval Academy on Monday. It was their first stint at Annapolis since 1898, when they were called to duty in the Spanish-American War. An officer said that although the role of the Marine guards at the academy is strictly ceremonial, "their very presence will increase security."
