Taxing Nobel Prize Awards

October 28, 1987

Nobel Prize recipients must now pay taxes on their awards as on ordinary income. When billions of dollars pour through our fingers like grains of sand, it is appropriate to ask, "How picayune can we get?"

While other nations honor, reward and subsidize their "national treasures," as their outstandingly talented people are called, we punish our by taxing their awards.

It makes me feel ashamed.
