Miniature Japanese carvings fetched $1.36 million at auction in London, Christie's auction house announced this week. The miniature carvings, called netsuke , are made of wood, ivory, antler, bamboo and metal and depict a great variety of subjects: real and fanciful animals, gods and demons, flowers and food. The top price paid for one of the miniatures on Tuesday was $48,000 for an 18th-Century ivory figure of a doll.
