Eu Drops Out of Senate Race

October 29, 1987|Associated Press

SACRAMENTO — Secretary of State March Fong Eu withdrew from the U.S. Senate race today, citing her lagging fund raising and the refusal of her husband to disclose family finances among reasons for her decision.

Her withdrawal leaves Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy as the heavy favorite over television commentator Bill Press for the Democratic nomination. Although Eu put her Senate campaign on hold in July to devote her attention to an initiative campaign she is leading to increase liquor taxes to support law enforcement, aides had encouraged speculation that she would resume her Senate campaign when her initiative drive was completed in December.
