SAVONA, Italy — An Italian court sentenced an Irish freighter skipper on Wednesday to four years in prison for failing to report a cargo of 14 tons of weapons bound for the Persian Gulf aboard his ship in Savona harbor.
But the court granted skipper John Scallan, 48, of the Arab-owned freighter Fathulkayr provisional liberty pending further investigation. It ordered Scallan's passport to be confiscated and fined him $770.
