Construction Begins on Museum at UCLA

November 01, 1987

Construction has begun at UCLA on the Fowler Museum of Natural History, the $22-million home of the university's collection of ethnic art.

The facility will house the entire collection of UCLA's Museum of Cultural History, which contains 170,000 objects representing contemporary, historic and prehistoric cultures of Africa, Oceania, the Americas, Asia, the Near East and Europe. The new museum is scheduled to open in the fall of 1989.

Unlike the old museum quarters in the cramped basement of Haines Hall, the new facility will be big enough to allow curators to display many items from the museum's permanent collection, said Director Christopher Donnan.
