DUNKIRK, N.Y. — A freight train slammed into a car apparently trying to beat the locomotive past a crossing early Sunday, killing six high school seniors returning from a Halloween party, authorities said.

The crossing gate was operating when the Norfolk & Western train, traveling about 40 m.p.h., struck the car broadside, police said.
