Pop/rock

November 03, 1987| Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

From the 15 Minutes of Fame File: Woody Baker hadn't a clue who John Cougar Mellencamp was until the rocker invited him for a cup of coffee at the Midway Cafe in Elnora, Ind. Their 20-minute chat in the combination bar-cafe landed the 73-year-old welder on the cover of the rocker's latest album, "The Lonesome Jubilee." "He was a regular kind of guy," Baker said of Mellencamp. "He looked at the tattoos on my arm and compared them with his." Mellencamp, a Seymour native who lives in Bloomington, told Baker a couple of months ago that his picture would be on the album. "I saw myself in the Rolling Stone (magazine) the other day," Baker said. "Who'd ever thought of that?"
