Voting

November 03, 1987

Believe it or not Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) intends to introduce legislation to allow people to vote without registering or register on Election Day (Part I, Oct. 23). Not only would this proposal invite massive voter fraud but would cause chaotic conditions at every polling place. Pity the overworked election boards! Not to mention the increased cost to counties.

Legislation has already been introduced in the Assembly--AB 1240--which would allow people to register and vote on election day. This proposal has little support among election officials. It is a two-year bill and should be defeated--so should Cranston's proposal.
