The World : 2 Officers Killed in Protest

November 03, 1987

Two officers were killed and nine injured when about 200 people protesting the expansion of a runway at the Rhein-Main Airport near Frankfurt, West Germany, clashed with police. Police said the two officers were shot to death from close range as the crowd moved against a line of riot police, hurling bricks, stones and firebombs. The demonstrators were marking the sixth anniversary of a police raid on an encampment of environmentalists who were protesting the runway expansion. The protesters object to the noise of the planes and the destruction of forest needed for the project.
