November 05, 1987

The Palos Verdes girls and boys cross-country teams, ranked No. 1 in the 4-A Division, top a field of 19 South Bay teams in the CIF-Southern Section preliminaries Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The girls, led by Ashley Black, open defense of the 4-A title in a heat race at 10:15 a.m. They are unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state.

Also in girls competition are 4-A--Hawthorne, Rolling Hills, Torrance, Mira Costa; 2-A--Redondo, Leuzinger, Miraleste.

Other South Bay boys teams are 4-A--South Torrance, Torrance; 3-A--Mira Costa; 2-A--Leuzinger, St. Bernard, Redondo, Miraleste; 1-A--South Bay Lutheran.

Juan Carlos Chavez of Hawthorne (3-A) and Althea Moses of Morningside (2-A) will compete as individuals.
