Vietnamese authorities, moving to quash anti-Communist resistance, sentenced a Roman Catholic priest and 22 others to prison on charges of subversion. The Vietnam News Agency said the priest, Tran Dinh Thu, 81, was sentenced to life and the others to four to 20 years in prison. All were arrested between May and July in or near Ho Chi Minh City. The news agency said the defendants, operating out of Catholic churches in the former South Vietnamese capital, trained or contacted thousands of subversives over the last 10 years.
