BASIC SCHOOL SKILL SCORES : South Bay School Achievement Test Scores

November 08, 1987

These are results of the California Assessment Program test for third, sixth and eighth grades.

Each spring, students take a standardized test measuring basic reading, writing and math skills. Eighth-graders are also tested in social studies and science. This year third-grade scores rose slightly statewide, while sixth-grade scores remained the same. Statewide scores for eighth-graders jumped 4 to 6 points in all categories. Third- and sixth-graders in the Los Angeles Unified School District dipped between 1 and 5 points in all areas tested.

State officials say the scores are intended to provide a way to assess schoolwide academic performance comparing schools. Students do not receive individual scores.

Here is how to read the scores:

Schools are listed alphabetically by district. Scores are scaled between 100 and more than 400, and may be compared to district and state averages. For example, if the third grade at your school scored 295 in math, and state average is 285, children at your school are performing at a higher level than most third-graders statewide.

In general, a fluctuation of 10 points or less should not cause alarm, although state education officials say that the margin of error varies depending upon the size of the school. Dashes indicate that tests were not given or scores were not available.
