Payne Stewart shot a 65 to lead the United States into the final of the $950,000 World Championship of Golf at Inagi, Japan.

The U.S. PGA team will face the European PGA squad for the title in the battle between the world's four largest professional tours.

Stewart had an eagle, two birdies and a bogey on the front nine in posting the day's best round over the 7,017-yard, par-72 Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club course.

With Stewart leading the way, defeating Tateo Ozaki, the United States won five matches and lost one against Japan in the conclusion of round-robin play.
