KATHMANDU, Nepal — Peter Hillary, son of Mt. Everest's first conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary, has abandoned his second bid to climb the world's highest mountain, Nepal's Tourism Ministry said Tuesday.

All climbers tackling Everest from the Nepalese side, including two teams of Europeans and Americans, abandoned the attempt because of strong winds and bad weather, it said.

Hillary's first bid to follow his father to the top of the world, with a six-man team of Australians and New Zealanders, reached 26,900 feet and resulted in the deaths of two of its members in 1984.
